STARSTARSTAR
Medium
Gel plate monoprint triptych, acrylic on paper
Date
2025
This project expresses a passage of time in a similar way to how another piece of mine, "Changes", does, however this one is much more personal as it's a reflection on the passage of time in my own life in the form of a self portrait. The first piece in the triptych is very bright and playful, with stars all along the side and lettering which adds to the chaos in order to represent the joy and freedom of my childhood. The piece in the center is similarly colorful, but also much darker. It features my eyes from a recent photo, forcing the viewer to look me in the eye. This is about facing the present, no matter how stressful life may be at this point. There's a singular layered star on my forehead above both eyes as a reference to the idea of the third eye which represents spiritual awareness. The lettering is much more bold, showing more certainty than childhood, but is also shaky to show there is still intense uncertainty. This leads directly into the third piece, which is much more abstract and surreal to show true uncertainty in the future. There's hope in the eyes represented by the stars, but the only feature of mine is the lips, showing how much I could change. The layers of color also represent the multitude of paths I could end up on in the future. (click images below for information on the process of creating the piece)
